Here’s the next “Books Off the Shelf” installment. There is a world of books out there. More than anyone could get to in a lifetime. As my favorite mug states so succinctly, “So Many Books, So Little Time”. I will attempt to give you an idea on some books you might enjoy or not enjoy quite as much without ruining it with too many spoilers.
THE SUMMER TREE By Guy Gavriel Kay Rating: 10 out of 10 Five university students embark on a journey of self-discovery when they enter a realm of wizards and warriors, gods and mythical creatures--and good and evil… It all began with a lecture that introduced five university students to a man who would change their lives, a wizard who would take them from Earth to the heart of the first of all worlds--Fionavar. And take them Loren Silvercloak did, for his need--the need of Fionavar and all the worlds--was great indeed. And in a marvelous land of men and dwarves, of wizards and gods, five young people discovered who they were truly meant to be. For they are a long-awaited part of the pattern known as the Fionavar Tapestry, and only if they accepted their destiny would the armies of the Light stand any chance of surviving the wrath the Unraveller and his minions of darkness intend to unleash upon the world… THE SUMMER TREE is the first book of The Fionavar Tapestry, Kay’s critically acclaimed fantasy trilogy. I know I mentioned some of this in my earlier post: http://www.ryanjdoughan.com/blog/-why-fiction-why-fantasy-part-2 but let me start by saying, you need to read this book. You need to read this trilogy. You need to read everything Kay has ever written. I stumbled upon THE SUMMER TREE some ten or twelve years ago in a bookstore. Well, I actually stumbled upon The Lions of Al-Rassan, a later book of Kay’s, but then I went back to start from the beginning. I believe I’ve read all of his books, and I assure you, you will not be disappointed with Kay’s writing. Kay has the incredible ability of tying a deep, believable world with authentic, lovable characters. In a lot of ways THE SUMMER TREE is a classic tale of good vs. evil in a world where evil seems so exceedingly strong. Kay paints such a picture of love and sacrifice along with an exciting ride of action and intrigue that you won’t be able to put this book down. THE SUMMER TREE will swallow you up in its depth, and you’ll reach the end longing for more. I may review a few more of Kay’s books as we move forward, but for now, you need to pick up this book. You need to postpone the rest of your reading queue and bump this to the top, and by this I mean all of Kay’s books. Enjoy the reading. Have you read THE SUMMER TREE? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it or any of Kay’s books. And as ever, if you have suggestions of books to review, please let me know. If it is Science Fiction or Fantasy, there is a good chance it is on my shelf or should be. If you would like to be the first to hear about other great books, feel free to sign up on the right. I’m also giving away the first chapters of my upcoming novel, MIST FALCON, right now. I would love to send it your way, so do me a favor and sign up. |
