More Books Off the Shelf—So Many Books So Little Time!
Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay Rating 9.5 out of 10 Tigana is the magical story of a beleaguered land struggling to be free. It is the tale of a people so cursed by the black sorcery of a cruel despotic king that even the name of their once-beautiful homeland cannot be spoken or remembered. But years after the devastation, a handful of courageous men and women embark upon a dangerous crusade to overthrow their conquerors and bring back to the dark world the brilliance of a long-lost name…Tigana. Against the magnificently rendered background of a world both sensuous and barbaric, this sweeping epic of passionate people pursuing their dream is breath taking in its vision, changing forever the boundaries of fantasy fiction. So, I know I have written on several occasions about Kay and his incredible talent. I really can’t stress enough how much you need to read Tigana and ALL OF KAY’S BOOKS. There’s a link on the right. Click on it, order the book, then read this review. The Peninsula of the Palm is a conquered land split and divided by two foreign conquerors, Brandin, King of Ygrath, and Alberico, a warlord from the empire of Barbadior. Brandin and Alberico are not only conquerors and rulers; they are fascinatingly powerful sorcerers. Their power makes them nearly impossible to kill or defeat and the provinces of the Palm can do little but bow before their new masters. During the early struggles of the Palm’s invasion, Brandin’s son is slain when one of the provinces fights back. In his rage, Brandin not only destroys the provinces thoroughly, but eradicates the memory of it from the minds of the people of the Palm. He goes so far as to strip its name, the name of Tigana, from existence. Only those few survivors of the destruction can remember, and even that is purposeful torture, for no one they share the name or memory with can grasp it in their minds. TIGANA is the tale of a few who set out to reclaim their heritage and their land by trying to eliminate their conquering oppresors. And oh my goodness, what a story! Read this! If you like great fantasy and fantastic writing, read this! As ever, Guy Gavriel Kay’s ability to create a world and characters that force both laughter and tears is unmatched. The magic system is delightfully complex, forcing an entire plot around it in a twisting good read. Your heart will ache for characters as love battles hate, and they try to hunt the gray area between white and black to find the right course. Brilliant! Simply, brilliant! I loved this book! Pick up a copy and give it a read. If you’ve read TIGANA or any of Kay’s work, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Leave a message below.
